Fun, Connection & Belonging: A Campus Connection Initiative for Carleton University
Strategic Impact Group — Kitty Johnson, Vicky Wiens, Ryan Dube, Maria Walt
People are physically present on campus, but experientially absent. Events go underattended, informal connection is shrinking, and belonging feels fragmented. This session asks: what are the conditions for authentic human connection in an age of digital overload?
Drawing on research and an environmental scan across campus, our Strategic Impact Group will tackle one aspect that is driving disengagement, digital overload — and practical responses. The session opens with a short interactive activity that demonstrates its central premise: the conversation is the relationship.
Our key insight: belonging is a practice. Fun and play are evidence-backed drivers of engagement and belonging – not optional extras. Tackling this wicked problem takes local, repeatable actions. Small wins build ripples. Ripples build culture.
Untapped Carleton
Strategic Impact Group – Ally Sebben, Cole Van De Ven, Nick Saucier, Mastoor Al Kaboody
Across Carleton, there is a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise. But how often do we know who to turn to outside our own teams and networks? What could we accomplish if we made those connections easier?
Untapped Carleton explores how stronger connections across the university can help us share knowledge, learn from one another and find new ways to work together. This interactive session will introduce a shared learning and knowledge exchange that creates space for people to connect around common interests, challenges and areas of expertise.
Together, we’ll explore how creating more opportunities to connect can help us make better use of the expertise already within Carleton, strengthen relationships across the university and find new ways to move our work forward.
Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom: An Educators’ Wicked Problem
Strategic Impact Group – Dennis Kao, Robert Wharram, Lisa Runge-Faubert, Ian Pulsifer
The rapid advent of generative AI technologies has significantly altered the university landscape and for educators, representing both opportunities and challenges. In our presentation, we seek to illuminate both. Using Carleton University as a case study, we discuss the challenges facing educators, the development and philosophy underpinning the new AI Framework, and examples of AI implementation in the classroom.
