Shelter-in-Place Protocol
Emergencies can happen without warning. Knowing how to shelter-in-place is essential for your safety and the safety of others.
Every floor on campus has an EHS Board with a QR Code linking to the Safety Plan for that building. Check out the plan for the buildings you frequent regularly to know what to do in case of emergency.
If you know in advance that you may need assistance during a shelter-in-place event, please complete the Persons Requesting Assistance form. This would apply to any person who is not able to exit a building safely by means of evacuation stairwells.
What to Do in a Shelter-in-Place Situation
- Choose a small room with a closing door, ideally with a window and phone.
- Call Campus Safety at 613-520-4444 or Ext. 4444 to report your location.
- Tell Campus Safety that you are sheltering in place.
- Provide your name and exact location.
- Share any hazards you have noted (smoke, heat, flames, etc.).
- Mention any mobility restrictions or health conditions.
- Let them know if you are with others, and how many of you there are.
- Do NOT use elevators. They automatically return to the ground floor and will not respond to calls during emergencies on any floor.
