Surviving and Thriving in November
As the clocks have rolled back for daylight saving, you might be feeling the shift. Literally. Shorter days and darker evenings can impact our energy, focus, and motivation. If you’ve noticed it’s harder to get going in the morning or stay productive in the afternoon, you’re not alone.
Navigating the November Blues
November brings a drop in daylight, and with it, a dip in mood and mental clarity for many. This can affect learning, memory, and executive function. Here are a few strategies to stay sharp and supported:
- Let the light in: Sit near windows, take walks during daylight hours, and consider using a daylight lamp to boost alertness.
- Stick to a routine: Consistent sleep and study schedules help regulate your internal clock and improve focus.
- Move your body: Even short bursts of movement can lift your mood and re-energize your brain.
- Connect with others: Study groups, peer check-ins, or a quick chat with a friend can combat isolation and boost motivation.
Maintaining the Mid-Term Momentum
We are officially in the second half of the term. That means final projects, papers, and presentations are on the horizon. Start now, as we always say, your future self will thank you. Break big tasks into smaller steps, set mini-deadlines, and use planners or apps to stay on track.
If you need a little help to maintain the momentum, Carleton offers learning support services to assist you along the way:
- Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) offers “How to…Drop-in Sessions” and individual writing and learning support appointments.
- MacOdrum Library offers research help for assignments and papers through their help desk, subject specialists, and resource guides.
- Math Tutorial Centre provides free tutorial support for first-year Math courses.
- Science Student Success Centre provides individual and small group support through mentors in the sciences.
