Dr. John Davis Burton Award
Created in the memory of Dr. John Davis Burton, who was a champion and advocate for persons with disabilities. Dr. Burton made significant contributions toward awareness, equity, and integration of persons with disabilities throughout his career as an educator and coordinator of educational support services both at Carleton University and Algonquin College.
The Dr. John Davis Burton Award is given annually to a deserving student who is enrolled at Algonquin College, Carleton University, La Cité collègiale or the University of Ottawa.

IODE Lord Dundonald Giselle Lazure Memorial Award
Awarded every-other year on the recommendation of the Paul Menton Centre to an outstanding student entering or proceeding from one year to another at Carleton University who is in demonstrated financial need. Eligible students will have a permanent mental or physical disability and be registered with the Paul Menton Centre. Established in 2015 by the IODE Lord Dundonald Chapter.
Eligible applicants will:
- be an outstanding student entering or proceeding from one year to another at Carleton;
- demonstrate financial need (by completing and submitting the application form);
- have a permanent mental or physical disability;
- be registered with PMC.

Making a Difference Award
The Making a Difference Award is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the Paul Menton Centre, to outstanding students with a documented permanent physical disability entering a program of study within the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science, the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs or the Bachelor of Commerce program. Recipients will demonstrate leadership, academic excellence and be committed to making a difference in their larger communities.

Susan Scott Parker Scholarship
Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Paul Menton Centre to an outstanding undergraduate student entering or proceeding from one year to another at Carleton University. Value: $4,000.
Eligible students will:
- have a permanent disability;
- be registered with the Paul Menton Centre;
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
Preference will be given to a female student. Established by CFUW-Ottawa Club at the request of Fran Harding and funded through generous donations from Fran and other CFUW-Ottawa Club members. It is named in honour of Susan Scott Parker, a Canadian, who is an advocate for the rights of disabled persons in the United Kingdom. Revised 2017.

Thomas Sorensen Memorial Scholarship
The Thomas Sorensen Memorial Scholarship was established by the Sorensen family to honour the legacy of their son, Thomas Sorensen, who was a student at Carleton from 2013-2014. Thomas had big dreams, was a true advocate for persons with disabilities and devoted countless hours volunteering and fundraising for various charitable organizations. He would never turn down an opportunity to educate anyone who was willing to listen.

Walker Wood Award
Awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the Paul Menton Centre, the Walker Wood Award is granted to outstanding students with a permanent disability enrolled in any program of study at Carleton University.
October 31 Deadlines
Canadian Council of the Blind Bursary
Awarded annually to one or more blind or visually impaired students.
The eligible student(s) must:
- be registered with the Paul Menton Centre
- complete the Canadian Council of the Blind Bursary application form no later than the application deadline;
- be in good academic standing; and able to demonstrate through a brief submission, how this bursary, if awarded, would assist them in furthering the goals of Canadian Council of the Blind within the Carleton community.
Eligible recipients must demonstrate financial need (via the application form), must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person), and must meet the OSAP Ontario Residency requirements. Endowed in 2006 by the Canadian Council of the Blind.

Canadian Council of the Blind Bursary Application Form
All applications for the Canadian Council of the Blind Bursary must be submitted, no later than the listed deadline each year, directly to Carleton Awards and Financial Aid, awards@carleton.ca. Charles Watters Memorial Bursary
Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Paul Menton Centre, to undergraduate students with a permanent physical disability who are in demonstrated financial need and are continuing from one year to another in any program of full or part time study at Carleton University. Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree within the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
Eligible recipients must be must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrant or a protected person), be registered with the Paul Menton Centre. Application is required. Endowed in 2021 by friends and family in memory of Charles Watters.

Ed Ireland Bursaries for Students with Disabilities
Awarded annually to deserving students proceeding from year to another, on the recommendation of the Paul Menton Centre. Two students will be selected from each of the following areas; College of Humanities, Human Rights, Electronics – doing research work in the area of silicon-based optical sensors, the Attendants Service Program, and students with disabilities registered with the Paul Menton Centre. Recipients will be in demonstrated financial need.

Hollis Peirce Bursary
Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Paul Menton Centre to students with a permanent physical disability who are in demonstrated financial need and are entering or continuing in any program of study at Carleton University. Preference will be for students enrolled in a program within the Department of History.

John Teuscher Memorial Scholarship
Endowed in 2000 by family and friends of the late Jonathan Brant Teuscher, B.A. 1999, the John Teuscher Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually based on the recommendation of the Paul Menton Centre to a student (or students) with a Learning Disability proceeding from one academic year to another.

Nicholas Leroux Memorial Bursary
Awarded annually, to deserving undergraduate students entering or proceeding from one year to another of any program, to support students with disabilities in the attendant services program at Carleton University.
Recipients must:
- have demonstrated financial need by completing the Nicholas Leroux Memorial Bursary Application Form;
- must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrants or protected persons);
- must meet OSAP’s Ontario residency requirements.

Paul Menton Memorial Bursary
Awarded annually to a physically disabled student, in good academic standing, who is proceeding from one year to another of an undergraduate program and is in need of financial assistance. Endowed 1990 by family and friends in memory of Paul Menton, Carleton University’s first co-ordinator of disabled programs. For more information about this bursary, contact the Awards Office.
William Fraser Bursary for Students with Disabilities
Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director, Paul Menton Centre to undergraduate students with a permanent physical disability. Eligible recipients will be in demonstrated financial need and be registered with the Paul Menton Centre. Endowed in 2014 by Joan Gazeley.

OTHER CARLETON SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES
The Awards Office has an extensive list of entrance scholarships and bursaries available for all eligible students enrolled at Carleton. Entrance scholarships and the amount awarded are based on academic standing; bursaries are awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial needs and other non-academic criteria.
GOVERNMENT FUNDED PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) – Reduced Course Load
Students accessing Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) and taking a reduced course load (minimum of 2 half-credits or 1 full-credit per term) due to permanent disability may qualify for funding under OSAP. A permanent disability is defined by OSAP as a functional limitation that is caused by a physical or mental impairment that restricts a person’s ability to perform the daily activities necessary to participate in studies at the post-secondary level or in the labour force, and that is expected to remain with him or her for his or her expected natural life. Identification of a disability should be made on the online OSAP Application Form. You will be asked to provide a Disability Verification Form (DVF) to confirm the presence of a permanent disability.
Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD)
The BSWD is an Ontario bursary for full-time and part-time students with either a permanent or temporary disability and who have disability-related educational costs for services or equipment that are not covered by another agency or service and are required for postsecondary participation. It is not intended to cover regular educational costs such as tuition, rent, books and supplies that have already been calculated under your OSAP entitlement amount. Application for the BSWD is made through the Paul Menton Centre. For more information about applying to the BSWD, ask your PMC coordinator.
Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Persons with Permanent Disabilities (CSG-PDSE)
The CSG-PDSE is a federal bursary for full-time and part-time students with permanent disabilities and have disability-related educational costs for services or equipment that are not covered by another agency or service and are required for postsecondary participation. Application for the CSG-PDSE is made through the Paul Menton Centre. For more information about applying to the BSWD, ask your PMC coordinator.

Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA) Scholarship Program
The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA) and the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association Foundation (CHHAF) are pleased to inform you of its CHHA Scholarship Program for hard of hearing, deafened and oral deaf post-secondary students. Established with private donations in 2002, the Scholarship Program will accept applications from any hard of hearing, deafened or oral deaf student registered in a full-time program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.
