The following are frequently asked questions for auditing students.
- What does it mean to audit a course?
Auditing a course means that you are formally registered in a course and are permitted to attend lectures but you are not required to submit coursework or write final exams.
- How much does it cost to audit a course?

Regular tuition fees apply to courses taken for audit. For more information regarding tuition fees for audit courses, please visit the Student Accounts Receivable website.
- What courses are eligible to be audited?

Permission to audit is based on demand for credit registration and some courses are not available for audit purposes. Students may audit courses which are not designated as having limited enrolment.
- How do I register to audit a course?

Formal registration is required and students may be required to satisfy all registration requirements. For assistance with registering for a course through Carleton Central please view our how-to videos throughout the Registration Steps section.
Once you have registered for the course through Carleton Central you will need to complete the “Request for Permission to Audit a Course” form (see “downloads” section). Undergraduate Students or Special Students should return the completed “Request for Permission to Audit a Course” document to the Registrar’s Office by e-mail to registrar@carleton.ca. Graduate Students should return this form to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs by email to GraduateStudies@cunet.carleton.ca.
- Are there deadlines for applying to audit a course?

The deadline to request to change a course registration status from credit to audit or audit to credit is the last day for registration and course changes. Students may not petition to change status from audit to credit after the last day to register.
- How will I be graded for an audited course?

Auditors receive no grade and no credit for the courses they are enrolled in. The completion of an audited course will result in a grade of Audit (AUD) appearing on your official transcript. AUD is a permanent notation that appears on your official transcript signifying no academic credit. The AUD notation will not impact your CGPA.
- I am an undergraduate student, can I audit a course? Will it count in my degree program?

Undergraduate students may be permitted to audit a course, however, the course does not result in a letter grade received and will not count towards your degree program. The notation of Audit (AUD) will appear on your transcript.
- I am a Special Student, can I audit a course?

Special Students may be permitted to audit a course, however, the course does not result in a letter grade received. The notation of Audit (AUD) will appear on your transcript.
- I am a Special Student, can I audit a Graduate Studies course?

Special Students may be permitted to audit a Graduate Studies course.
If you are a Special Student attempting to audit a Graduate Studies course you will first be required to complete formal registration. Students may be required to satisfy all registration requirements. Once you have registered for the course through Carleton Central you will need to have the “Request for Permission to Audit a Course” form (see downloads section) completed by the Course Instructor and Course Department of the Graduate Studies course you are attempting to audit.
Special Students should return the completed “Request for Permission to Audit a Course” document to the Registrar’s Office, 300 Tory Building or by e-mail to registrar@carleton.ca if the course they are attempting to audit is an Undergraduate or Graduate Studies course.
