First Year Course Selection Guide

Please read this degree guide prior to registering.

Your Degree Program (BHum)

The Bachelor of Humanities degree is an Honours degree requiring 20.0 credits, normally completed in four years, with 5.0 credits per year.

Language requirement

Students in both the BHUM and BHUM Bio degrees must satisfy the language requirement.  Read this page carefully for more important information that will impact your first year course selection.

Please Note: Registering in the courses below is mandatory.  You must register in these five credits to satisfy your first-year program requirements.

Bachelor of Humanities Honours and Combined Honours

Fall Term

HUMS 1000 (full credit over both terms) Lecture and group component

HUMS 1200 (0.5 credit)

RELI 1731 (0.5 credit)

Language (0.5 credit or 1.0 over both terms) Consult the Language Requirement page for more information

Elective (0.5 credit or 1.0 over both terms)

Total: 2.5 credits

Winter Term

HUMS 1000 (full credit over both terms) Lecture and group component

HUMS 1005 (0.5) *precludes additional credit for ANTH 1001

CLCV 2010 (0.5)

Language (0.5 credit or 1.0 over both terms) Consult the Language Requirement page for more information

Elective (0.5 credit or 1.0 over both terms)

Total: 2.5 credits

Combined Honours Humanities and Biology

Fall Term

HUMS 1000 (full credit over both terms) Lecture and group component

HUMS 1200 (0.5 credit)

BIOL 1103 (0.5 credit) Lecture and lab component

CHEM 1001 or CHEM 1005 (0.5 credit) Lecture and lab component

Total: 2.0 credits

Winter Term

HUMS 1000 (full credit over both terms) Lecture and group component

CLCV 2010 (0.5 credit)

BIOL 1104 (0.5 credit) Lecture and lab component

CHEM 1002 (0.5 credit) if selected CHEM 1001 or CHEM 1006 (0.5 credit) if selected CHEM 1005

Total: 2.0 credits

For the final 1.0 credit: :
1.0 credit in a beginner’s level language. You must review the language requirement webpage for important information. Only if your language requirement is waived or you can enroll in an intermediate language in your second year would you take  RELI 1731 (fall) and HUMS 1005 (winter).
