First Year Course Selection Guide
Welcome to Carleton and your Bachelor of International Business Degree Program. Please read this guide prior to registering in your first year courses.
Your Degree Program
The Bachelor of International Business (BIB) degree requires the completion of 20.0 credits.
To register in a full course load in your first year, you must enroll in 5.0 credits (2.5 credits in the Fall term, and 2.5 credits in the Winter term). Additionally, to fulfill the Employability requirement of your first year, you must also register in and complete two 0.0 credit courses (BUSI 1996 in the Fall, and BUSI 1997 in the Winter).
Your First Year Course Selection Guide
Please select a guide and register in courses accordingly with your admission requirements:
BACHELOR OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
Remember to register in both the Fall and Winter terms when your time ticket opens!
1. BUSI 1701: Introduction to International Business (0.5 credits)
When: Fall term.
Notes: Register in both the Lecture and the Tutorial.
2. BUSI 1800 (section A or B): Introduction to Business (0.5 credits)
When: Fall term.
Notes: Register in both the Lecture and the Tutorial. BUSI 1800 must be successfully completed in the Fall term in order to continue in BUSI 1004 in the Winter term: BUSI 1800 is a prerequisite for BUSI 1004.
3. ECON 1001: Introduction to Economics: Microeconomics (0.5 credits)
When: Fall term.
Notes: Section D or Section E are open to Business students only.
4. ECON 1002: Introduction to Economics: Macroeconomics (0.5 credits)
When: Winter term.
Notes: Section D or Section E are open to Business students only. ECON 1001 is not a prerequisite for ECON 1002.
5. BUSI 1004: Financial Accounting for Business Students (0.5 credits)
When: Winter term.
Notes: Add this course to your Winter registration after registering for BUSI 1800 in the Fall term – you may receive a prerequisite warning while planning your worksheet. Register in both the Lecture and the Tutorial. BUSI 1004 is a prerequisite for BUSI 1005. BUSI 1005 will be completed in Year 2.
6. MATH 1009: Mathematics for Business (0.5 credits)
When: Fall OR Winter term.
Notes: Register in both a Lecture and a Tutorial.
7. BUSI 1401: Foundations of Information Systems (0.5 credits)
When: Fall OR Winter term.
Notes: Students starting in Level 1 of JAPA or CHIN Language courses will complete this course in Year 2.
8. BUSI 1996: Employability Passport (0.0 credits)
When: Fall term.
Notes: This is a mandatory, non-credit course. The course does not have a scheduled class time; therefore, it will not show up on your timetable. Course completion is required for the year abroad.
9. BUSI 1997: Employability Passport (0.0 credits)
When: Winter term.
Notes: This is a mandatory, non-credit course. The course does not have a scheduled class time; therefore, it will not show up on your timetable. Course completion is required for the year abroad.
10. Free Electives (0.5 credits)
When: Fall OR Winter term.
Notes: Students starting in Level 1 of FREN, GERM, or SPAN language courses may select one half credit elective course.
11. BIB Language Selection and Registration
- Step 1: Declare your BIB Language on the BIB Language Selection Form.
- Step 2: Complete the Level placement process outlined on the BIB Language Selection Form for your selected language. Your required language courses will be determined by your language assessment and placement.
- Step 3: If you place higher than Level 1 in your selected language OR if you test-out of your language, please contact Rhonda Kelly at Sprott at Rhonda.Kelly@carleton.ca to discuss your individualized plan.
Level 1 Courses by Language
- Spanish: SPAN 1010 Section C (0.5 credit in Fall) and SPAN 1020 Section A (0.5 credit in Winter)
- German: GERM 1010 Section A (0.5 credit in Fall) and GERM 1020 Section A (0.5 credit in Winter)
- Japanese: JAPA 1110 Section A (1.0 credit in Fall) and JAPA 2110 Section A (1.0 credit in Winter)
- Mandarin: CHIN 1110 Section A (1.0 credit in Fall) and CHIN 2110 Section A (1.0 credit in Winter)
- French: FREN 1001 (Full Year Course – 0.5 credit in both the Fall and Winter) Register in the same section in both terms.
