First Year Course Selection Guide

Welcome to Carleton and your Bachelor of International Business Degree Program. Please read this degree guide prior to registering.

Your Degree Program

The Bachelor of International Business (BIB) degree requires the completion of 20.0 credits. If you would like to register in a full course load in your first year, you must enroll in 5.0 credits (2.5 in the Fall semester and 2.5 credits in the Winter semester).

Your Language

Declare your Bachelor of International Business Language by completing the BIB Language Selection Form.

BIB First Year Course Selection

Remember to register in both the Fall and Winter terms when your time ticket opens!

1. BUSI 1701: Introduction to International Business (0.5 credit). Fall term.
NOTE: BUSI 1701 is a prerequisite for BUSI 1004.

2. Language Courses: course sequencing will be determined by your language assessment. Please email rhonda.kelly@carleton.ca if you place higher than the first-year level OR if you test-out of your language to discuss your individualized course plan.

First-Year Level Intensive Language Courses (1.0 credit in Fall and 1.0 credit in Winter)

  • Spanish: SPAN 1110 (Fall) and SPAN 2110 (Winter)
  • German: GERM 1110 (Fall) and GERM 2110 (Winter)
  • Japanese: JAPA 1110 (Fall) and JAPA 2110 (Winter)
  • Mandarin: CHIN 1110 (Fall) and CHIN 2110 (Winter)
  • French: FREN 1001 (Fall) and FREN 1002 (Winter)  

3. ECON 1001: Introduction to Economics: Microeconomics (0.5 credit). Fall OR Winter term. You must choose the section that is only open to Business students.

4. ECON 1002: Introduction to Economics: Macroeconomics (0.5 credit). Fall OR Winter term. You must choose the section that is only open to Business students.
NOTE: ECON 1001 in not a prerequisite for ECON 1002.

5. BUSI 1004: Financial Accounting for Business Students (0.5 credit). Winter term. You must successfully complete BUSI 1701 in the Fall term in order to remain in BUSI 1004 in the Winter term.
NOTE: You will require BUSI 1004 to gain access in your second year to BUSI 1005: Managerial Accounting for Business Students.

6. MATH 1009: Mathematics for Business (0.5 credit). Fall or Winter term.

7. Free Elective (0.5 credit). To complete your registration in 2.5 credits (full course load), you may select a course in any subject based on interest in either Fall or Winter.

5. BUSI 1004: Financial Accounting for Business Students (0.5 credit). Winter term. You must successfully complete BUSI 1701 in the Fall term in order to remain in BUSI 1004 in the Winter term.
NOTE: You will require BUSI 1004 to gain access in your second year to BUSI 1005: Managerial Accounting for Business Students.

6. MATH 0009: Calculus and Vectors (0.5 credit). Fall term.
NOTE: You must successfully complete this course in your first term of registration (Fall term) to meet the conditional Math requirement of your Offer of Admission and remain in the BIB program. This credit does not count towards your BIB program requirements. Your registration in MATH 0009 in the Fall term will result in you having to complete 0.5 credits in a future term, prior to your graduation.

7. MATH 1009: Mathematics for Business (0.5 credit). Winter term.
