ZSMA and ZIDM room characteristics represent interactive desktop computer monitors that allow instructors to open PowerPoint files, spreadsheets, PDF’s or other computer applications and annotate overtop using a built-in pen or stylus. Functionally, they are very similar; the only difference is that ZSMA includes SMART software while ZIDM does not. ZSMA - includes proprietary SMART software that creates a whiteboard environment, allowing faculty to create and save hand-written notes, formulas or equations.  ZIDM - users can still annotate overtop Windows applications; however the new versions of interactive desktop computer monitors don’t require the SMART software to operate. Instead, users can open a basic program like Microsoft Paint and make notes on a blank white canvas.
