BOG Meeting Summary: June 1

In compliance with Ontario’s Essential Services Order, the Carleton University Board of Governors held its meeting remotely on June 1, 2021. Minutes from the meeting will be posted on the Board of Governors website once available. The following are highlights:

President & Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon Reappointed

Upon the unanimous recommendation of the advisory committee, the Board approved the reappointment of President Bacon for a second, five-year term as Carleton’s President and Vice-Chancellor. Since joining Carleton on July 1, 2018, President Bacon has led the university towards new heights and has demonstrated exceptional leadership, especially through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sexual Violence Annual Report

As stipulated in the Carleton University Sexual Violence Policy, the Board is required to receive an annual report on Sexual Violence prepared by the Department of Equity and Inclusive Communities and the Office of the Vice-President (Students and Enrolment). The report outlines Carleton’s pivot to an online environment, annual statistics, and the prevention, education and awareness initiatives provided at the university. The Board also received an update on the ongoing implementation of the 2020 Honouring Each Other Report: a living document created to provide an adaptable and innovative strategy towards building consent culture at Carleton.

Return to Campus Plan

An update on Carleton’s Return to Campus plan was provided. Carleton continues to prepare for a fall 2021 semester where both in-person and online classes will be offered. For Carleton employees, units will return to campus in stages to allow for physical distancing measures. The return to campus plan includes the preparation of buildings, supplies, policies and procedures, vaccinations and accommodations. All plans are flexible and are subject to evolving provincial guidelines and health and safety requirements.

Domestic Tuition Fees Remain Unchanged

The Board approved Carleton’s domestic tuition fees framework for the 2021/22 year. In line with the provincial government’s tuition framework, there will be no changes in tuition for Ontario students. While the Province recently permitted a three percent increase for out-of-province students, these additional fees will not be applied for 2021/22 due to the late timeline and implementation issues.

SIP Annual Report

President Bacon provided an update on Carleton’s Strategic Integrated Plan (SIP). In the face of the COVID-19 crisis, the university continued to enhance its academic mission and made great progress across all three of the SIP’s strategic directions. Achievements included a sharp increase in research productivity and impact, improvements to online pedagogy, and the development of critical plans for Indigenous initiatives, Accessibility, Internationalization, and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

President’s Annual Report

President Bacon shared his 2021 President’s Report. The document aims to capture the highlights of a year marked by unprecedented challenges, but also by tremendous successes.
