To complete the Student Support Certificate, you must participate in a total of six workshops. Each workshop addresses different and valuable areas of learning and development for student facing professionals. In order to receive the Student Support Certificate, please adhere to the following specifications:
- Complete all four required modules, in addition to two elective topics (one of which must be Supporting Students in Distress or Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Violence), for a total of six workshops.
- Complete post workshop reflections and learning assessments in BrightSpace.

- Cross Cultural Competence Training

- Effective Communication and De-Escalation Skills

Effective communication is an important foundation to any interaction. This workshop addresses core competencies related to communicating effectively with students, including mitigating barriers to effective communication and utilizing communication techniques from motivational interviewing. The workshop will also provide strategies for communicating in more challenging circumstances, such as delivering bad news and managing escalated situations. - Indigenous Cultural Awareness Workshop

This workshop will help participants understand the work The Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement are doing to support Indigenous students, staff, and faculty on campus. The workshop will include an overview of the historical context, which has impacted contemporary relationships between Indigenous Peoples and academic institutions. Participants will learn to effectively integrate strategies for communication and relationship building skills with Indigenous students where they can direct Indigenous students to proper resources which will better support Indigenous individuals on campus. This workshop will help participants to understand their role in the network of student support at Carleton University. It will explore help-seeking behaviours in students, the holistic student experience, an overview of various student support services on campus, and will include best practices for an effective referral, including specific attention on how FIPPA plays into the referral process. This interactive workshop will introduce the topics of disabilities and accessibility in the university environment in general, and specific to Carleton University. We will explore the Why, What, and How in the context of student services, from relevant policies and trends at Carleton, to disability related accommodations and universal design in higher education. - Building Student Resilience

University can be a stressful experience for many students and there is increasing evidence that suggests the prevalence of psychological challenges such as distress, depression and anxiety amongst university students. As faculty and staff, one significant approach we can take towards collaboratively supporting our students is through building their resilience. Resilience refers to the ability to adapt positively to adversity, and student’s capacity to build resilience has been shown to correlate with one’s overall mental health and well-being. Wellness Services is pleased to be offering this virtual workshop to faculty and staff on what resilience is, why it’s important, and how we can foster resilience in our students. - Community Approaches to Sexual Violence Prevention

How can we create a supportive and protective environment for survivors? Equity and Inclusive Communities offers a 2.5 hour workshop that expands on how to support a student or colleague who discloses sexual violence. The training will cover various sexual violence prevention efforts, bystander intervention, implementing trauma informed-practices, and the Sexual Violence Policy. Please note that completion of the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Training is mandatory before registering for this workshop. - Supporting Student Well-being: Understanding the Care Report

As staff and faculty on a large university campus, you may encounter students in a variety of difficult situations and it is reasonable to be concerned at times. This session will go into detail about the Wellness Services’ Care Report System, which is a web-secured reporting mechanism that anyone (staff, faculty, friend, student, community member, etc.), on or off campus, can utilize if they are concerned for a student. Join this session to learn more about what a Care Report is, when and how to submit one, what happens after, and to ask any questions you may have about how Wellness Services supports students.
