Discover Art History at Carleton

Art is not what you think it is! In Art History, we study the realm of visual communication, both Western and non-Western, as well as architecture, photography, and popular cultures.

Art History at Carleton University offers a unique breadth and depth of research expertise and teaching. We cover art from various times and places around the world, with strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity and critical global perspective. Enthusiastic and student-oriented faculty consider multiple influences on the arts and their transcultural/transnational exchanges and entanglements.

Our students value our Practicum (work placement) program, as it provides them with unique insights and experiences in the professional world. Students benefit from numerous exciting placements offered in a wide variety of institutions throughout the National Capital Region, such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History, the Ottawa Art Gallery, and CUAG (Carleton University’s own on-site gallery).

Careers

Carleton Art History grads have gone on to have successful careers in galleries, universities and institutions across the country. Check out a some of our graduate success stories, and to see what kind of work they are doing.

A Global Perspective

Students interested in transnational and transcultural art history are welcome to join the activities of the Centre for Transnational Cultural Analysis (CTCA).

CTCA is an interdisciplinary research hub that brings together students and scholars working with transcultural and transnational approaches to studies in the humanities.

Study Abroad Opportunities

We put a lot of effort into giving students experiences to study abroad. Whether summer courses in Rome or Istanbul, or a fall semester in Venice, Art & Architectural History students have opportunities to step out of Ottawa and see the world.
