Dr. Portela, from the University of Valencia, offered an interview on her research on sanctions, particularly her work on the effectiveness of EU sanctions, with Jenna Herbert, Research Assistant with the Centre. In the interview, she offers insights into the effectiveness of sanctions on Russia. The interview was completed on November 12, 2022.
Dr. Portela was the inaugural Konrad Adenauer Visiting Scholar on Transatlantic Relations with the Centre for European Studies at Carleton University during the Fall 2022 academic term.
While at Carleton University, Dr. Portela taught a graduate course on International Sanctions in a Transatlantic Context with the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS). Additionally, she was a guest lecturer for the Centre’s EU Policy Talk series on the “Effectiveness of EU Sanctions,” and she co-presented her most recent co-edited book publication, Multilateral Sanctions Revisited: Lessons Learned From Margaret Doxey, with co-editor Dr. Andrea Charron (University of Manitoba).
