Dr. Melita Gabrič
Ambassador of the European Union to Canada
Ambassador Gabrič began her tenure at the helm of the Delegation of the European Union to Canada on 1 February 2021, after serving as Ambassador of Slovenia to Canada since 2018. Ambassador Gabrič holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and has extensive experience in both bilateral and multilateral international relations. Prior to her Canadian assignment, she served as Slovenia’s Director of Development Co-operation and Humanitarian Aid. Previously she served as Diplomatic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister as well as to the President of Slovenia. Ambassador Gabrič was also the Secretary General of the Bled Strategic Forum and led the Slovenian national process on business and human rights. She held the position of Senior Advisor on Human Rights to two Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. She was also the Consul General of Slovenia in New York.
Since 2020, Ambassador Gabrič has had the honour of serving as Chairperson of the Women Heads of Diplomatic Missions in Ottawa.
The Ambassador speaks Slovene, English, French, and Serbian/Croatian. She enjoys jogging, downhill and cross-country skiing, as well as skating. She has a keen appreciation of contemporary art, literature, and design, and savours the beautiful natural landscapes and the rich cultural offerings of Canada.
About the Delegation of the European Union to Canada
Established in 1976, the Delegation of the European Union to Canada is a fully-fledged diplomatic mission and the natural contact point in Canada between the EU and the Canadian authorities. It also has a strong public diplomacy mandate designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of the European Union as well as EU-Canada relations. The EU Delegation marks its 45th anniversary on 19 February 2021.

Ambassadrice de l’Union européenne au Canada
L’Ambassadrice Gabrič a commencé son mandat à la tête de la Délégation de l’Union européenne au Canada le 1er février 2021.
Titulaire d’un doctorat en relations internationales et possédant une vaste expérience diplomatique, l’Ambassadrice Gabrič est une diplomate de carrière slovène. Postée depuis 2018 à Ottawa comme Ambassadrice de Slovénie au Canada et à Cuba, elle dirigeait auparavant la cellule d’aide au développement et de la coopération humanitaire au sein du Ministère des Affaires étrangères slovène. Au cours de sa carrière, l’Ambassadrice Gabrič a également été conseillère principale en matière de droits de l’Homme auprès de deux présidents de l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies, conseillère diplomatique du Président et du Premier Ministre de Slovénie et Consul général de Slovénie à New York. Elle a également occupé la fonction de Secrétaire General du Forum Stratégique de Bled et a dirigé le processus national slovène sur les entreprises et les droits humains.
Depuis 2020, l’Ambassadrice Gabrič a également l’honneur de présider le l’Association des Femmes Chef(fe) de Mission Diplomatique à Ottawa.
L’Ambassadrice parle Slovène, Anglais, Français, et Serbo-Croate. Dans son temps libre, elle pratique le jogging, le ski alpin et le ski de fond, ainsi que le patinage. Amatrice d’art contemporain, de littérature et de design, elle apprécie particulièrement les magnifiques paysages naturels et la richesse de l’offre culturelle qu’offre le Canada.

Établie en 1976, la Délégation de l’Union européenne au Canada est une mission diplomatique à part entière et donc le point de contact naturel au Canada entre l’UE et les autorités canadiennes. Elle dispose également d’un mandat de diplomatie publique visant à améliorer la connaissance et la compréhension de l’Union européenne ainsi que des relations UE-Canada. La Délégation de l’UE au Canada a célébré son 45e anniversaire le 19 février 2021.
