Jean Monnet Chair EUREAST Research Seminar: “Examining Democracy in Eastern Europe and Eurasia using the V-Dem Dataset”
February 7, 2019 at 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
| Location: | 3302 EURUS Seminar Room Richcraft Hall |
| Cost: | Free |
The Jean Monnet Chair will host a special research seminar with Prof. Vello Pettai, Professor of Comparative Politics, University of Tartu, Estonia.
His research work specializes in parties and party systems, democratization, nationalism and ethnicity, and Baltic States’ politics. Dr. Pettai’s talk will highlight results using the V-Dem dataset in assessing democratic outcomes, with examples from Eastern Europe and Eurasia. The talk will be of interest to students, researchers, and policy analysts who deal with democratization outcomes on a comparative basis or in particular regions, as well as those interested in the politics of the new democracies in Eastern Europe and Eurasia.
Dr. Pettai will look at democratization trends in the countries of Eastern Europe and Eurasia, making use of the V-Dem dataset. With more than 400 variables covering over 170 countries, this data set offers a broader perspective for academic research and policy analysis than more conventional resources such as Freedom House. The talk will examine trends in a range of countries, including Russia, Poland, and Hungary.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Research seminars are geared towards doctoral students and their supervisors, as well as EURUS MA students and graduate students in general interested in the research.
This seminar is organized by the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Relations with Russia and the Eastern Neighbourhood, supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
