Lecture: “Populism in Power” with Paul Taggart, University of Sussex

The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa Centre on Governance and the Konrad Adenauer Research Chair in Empirical Democracy Studies, will host a lecture, “Populism in Power”, with Paul Taggart, Professor of Politics at the University of Sussex, UK.
About the lecture:
What happens when populists transition from opposition to governance? This lecture explores the global experiences of populist governments and introduces a typology of strategies they adopt once in office. Professor Taggart identifies three distinct approaches: moderation or abandonment of populist rhetoric; institutional reshaping to consolidate power; and perpetual campaigning while in office. Drawing on recent international case studies, the talk examines how populists navigate the paradox of becoming the establishment they once opposed.
About the speaker:
Paul Taggart is Professor of Politics at the University of Sussex, UK. Professor Taggart’s work focuses on comparative politics and research about populism and Euroscepticism, including domestic politics of European integration. Most recently, he co-authored two articles, with CR Kaltwasser, “Populism and Democracy: Mapping the Field” (PS: Political Science & Politics, 58(1), January 2025, pp. 69-71) and “Populism and Democracy: The Road Ahead” (PS: Political Science & Politics, 58(1), January 2025, pp. 96-100). He is the author of six books and numerous articles (list of publications here). He has previously served as the Director of the Sussex European Institute, Head of Department of Politics, Deputy Head of School for Law, Politics and Sociology, at the University of Sussex. In addition, currently he is Chair of the Board of Directors for the journal, Government and Opposition; he served previously as editor for Government and Opposition and Politics. He is a regular commentator with the BBC local radio on British, European and US politics.
This lecture is an in-person event and will be presented in English. Researchers, students and the public are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be available.
