The Centre for European Studies at Carleton University is pleased to host a lecture, “Scandinavia in International Relations: Norm Entrepreneurs and Reluctant Europeans,” featuring Dr. Anders Wivel of the University of Copenhagen.
The Nordic countries are often recognized as successful norm entrepreneurs in international society, promoting causes such as peaceful conflict resolution and human rights as well as combating poverty and environmental degradation. At the same time, they are reluctant Europeans, guarding national sovereignty against the influence of EU institutions. This lecture explores the strain between Nordic global and European policies and discusses potential explanations.
Dr. Anders Wivel is Professor of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen. His two most recent books are The Nordic Countries and the European Union (co-edited with C. Howard Grøn and P . Nedergaard, Routledge, 2015) and The Routledge Handbook of Scandinavian Politics (co-edited with P . Nedergaard, Routledge, 2018
