Research: Dr. Averill-Bates investigates the induction of cellular apoptosis by xenobiotics that cause oxidative stress. Such xenobiotics include paraquat, halogenated hydrocarbons, aquatic toxin tri-butyl tin (TBT), organochlorine pesticides (eg DDT and heptachlor di) and quinone compounds such as menadione. She also studies acrolein, a ubiquitous air pollutant found in smoke (industrial, cigarette), and how it causes oxidative stress in lung epithelial cells.
