Research: Dr. Storey investigates metabolic rate depression as an adaptive survival mechanism in organisms that survive freezing cold, low oxygen and dessication. His model organisms include mammals that hibernate or estivate, reptiles and amphibians who survive freezing or complete anoxia and insects that are cold hardy. Most of the organisms that can effect metabolic rate depression have enhanced antioxidant defenses for reactive oxygen species upon revival/reoxygenation.
