Research: Dr. Cumming’s research focuses on the role of metabolism and oxidative stress in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. In particular his lab investigates (a) how aerobic glycolysis, a type of metabolism commonly found in cancer cells, enables neurons to become resistant to the toxic effects of amyloid beta (Aβ), a key peptide involved in neuronal cell death in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (b) mechanisms by which the antioxidant response is compromised in cell culture models of Huntington’s disease and (c) the effect that expression of p66shc, a gene that regulates the level of ROS and lifespan in mammals, has on redox processes linked to cytoskeletal remodelling.
