‘Selfies’, ‘Self-exploitation’ and the Law

lara k 2013-2

Wednesday, Nov. 13
Noon – 1 p.m.
Sexual Assault Support Centre
503 Robertson Hall

Prof. Lara Karaian will discuss her research on the child protection, crime prevention, and criminal law responses to youths’ production and distribution of digital sexual imagery. As part of her talk she will consider the slut-shaming, victim blaming and neo-liberal responsibilization of white, heterosexual, middle class teenage girls for preventing sexting’s purported harms, for both themselves and their peers. She’ll end with a brief consideration of the limits of the emerging construction of consensual sexting as ‘self-exploitation’ constituting a ‘serious crime.’
