The Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice (ICCJ) is appalled by the historic and ongoing examples of police violence and misconduct in Canada and the US. The ICCJ stands in solidarity with Black, Indigenous and racialized communities at this important moment of resistance. It is also keenly aware of its privileged position within academia as a site of knowledge production about crime and criminal (in)justice. We are a social justice minded, interdisciplinary, and critical space with a commitment to talking, teaching about, and unlearning anti-Black, racist, and colonial practices. Our staff and faculty will continue to work with students, to learn about, teach about, and dismantle systems of oppression and institutions of state violence. We will also work to hold spaces for students–particularly Black, Indigenous, and racialized students–to share their experiences with faculty if needed.
