How do I get permission to take CRCJ 3901?
Students need to complete an application form available at: Placement Form and submit it by May 1st. Then the applicants are ranked according to a grade point average calculated from the marks received for Laws 1000, Psyc 1001/1002, Soci 1001/1002 (or Soci 1003), Laws 2004, Psyc 2400, Soci 2445 and Soci 2450. The 80 top-ranked students will be offered a spot in CRCJ 3901. The next 7-10 students will be put on a waiting list in the event that any of the first 80 students decline the offer to participate. What is the cut-off to be accepted for CRCJ 3901?
There is no defined cut-off, it varies from year to year depending on the grade point averages of the other applicants. [top]
What was the minimum grade required for CRCJ 3901 last year?
We never know what the cut-off will be, but the last few years, the cut-off GPA has fluctuated between a B- (7.0) and a B (8.0). If you’re interested, submit an application form! [top]
How many students apply for CRCJ 3901?
Again, it varies from year to year. For 2009, there were 130 applicants; for 2008 there were 150 and for 2007 there were 165. [top]
Can I do the Field Placement in 4 th year?
Absolutely. Approximately 40% of the students that completed CRCJ 3901 last year were in their 4th year. [top]
What kinds of placements are available?
There are a variety of placements available, from Law Enforcement agencies, Law office (defence and prosecution), Governmental offices that deal with crime statistics, correctional programs and crime prevention, youth agencies, detention centres, victim advocacy groups. Note that availability changes from year to year. [top]
Do I get paid for Placement work?
No. Work at the Agency is done for academic credit only. [top]
Do students sometimes get hired by the Agencies after the Field Placement?
Sometimes. It depends on whether there are continuing positions available at the agency and whether you are eligible/qualified for them. Again, it varies from year to year as to who may be in a position to hire for the summer. [top]
Can I put my placement work on my resume?
Absolutely! At the end of the course, if you provide us with a mailing address, we will send you a “Letter of Completion” indicating how many hours you completed and the result of your final evaluation. [top]
How do I get into CRCJ 3902?
Honours students who have already been accepted into CRCJ 3901 and are assigned to an agency that needs the student to work at least 16 hours per week will be given permission to register in both CRCJ 3901 and CRCJ 3902 for the fall and winter terms to receive 2 credits for their placement. [top]
When will I know if I’m accepted?
Once you submit an application, and we have determined the top 80 applicants by GPA, you will be notified by an email to your Carleton Connect account whether or not you were accepted. [top]
How do I know where I will be placed?
Once accepted, you’ll receive an email from the Placement Co-ordinator with choices for placement and instructions as to what to do next. You will have some input on this. After reviewing the wishes of each accepted student as well as the agency supervisor, the Field Placement Co-ordinator will notify you of your agency assignment. [top]
When are decisions made about where I will be placed?
Every effort will be made to have a decision rendered before your registration period. [top]
What happens if I’m not accepted into the Field Placement?
If you applied to do the Field Placement in your third-year but weren’t accepted, you can apply again in fourth-year. If you are not accepted or choose not to apply at all, then you must complete 1.0 credit in approved Criminology electives at the 3000-level or higher.
