Biography

Katarina spent most of her childhood between Canada and Serbia, where she is originally from. Like many first-generation Canadians, the discrimination and inequality in the education, employment and welfare systems in a country that propagates multiculturalism and acceptance as its founding value became apparent at a very young age. Katarina sees the opportunity to pursue a higher education as a privilege not everyone is offered, especially as a young woman. She is grateful that Carleton University has given her the launching pad to not only further her explicit knowledge of economics and mathematics, but that the institution has fostered her understanding of contemporary ideas across academic disciplines, and continuously helped her to develop a more critical approach to current methods. She would especially like to thank Professors Frances Woolley, Michel Demers, and Dana Galizia for their guidance and knowledge, without which obtaining her bachelor’s degree would have been much more difficult.

What will you pursue next?

I feel very fortunate to have the upcoming opportunity to continue my studies in economics. This coming September, I will be starting the Master of Analysis and Policy in Economics program at the Paris School of Economics. I am extremely excited to start a new European adventure, and I hope to acquire the tools necessary to use my education to actively assist in dismantling oppressive structures and building better economic opportunities for everyone.
