BioTalent Canada
Overview: BioTalent Canada is one of the partners selected by the Federal Government to deliver the Student Work-Integrated Learning Program (SWILP). Working with employers and PSE institutions in the biotech sector BioTalent Canada will administer wage subsidies to hire co-op students.
Available funding
- Employers may be eligible to receive a wage subsidy of 50% (up to $5000) to hire a student and may be eligible to receive 70% (up to $7000) if they hire under-represented groups including women in STEM, Indigenous students, persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and first year students
- Ontario employers may also be eligible for a tax credit of up to $3000 for the Co-operative Education Tax Credit.
- Employers receiving other federal funding to hire the student will not be eligible to also receive SWILP funding.
Eligible Employers
- To qualify for the program, either the co-op position needs to have a biotechnology focus or the employer needs to have a biotechnology focus
- The company must provide a full-time work opportunity for a minimum of 16 weeks, 5 days a week, 7.5 hours a day
Eligible students
- Full time student enrolled in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) or business program at a Canadian post-secondary education (PSE) institution
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status
- Must be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
- Not currently employed as a paid employee at the host employer
How to Apply
- Complete an Employer Application Form and submit it along with a brief company description, and a description of the intended participant’s co-op position;
- Download your Employer Application Package
- Post your co-op opportunity via Carleton University’s CUHire for students in eligible programs to apply. (Note: Approval of the wage subsidy must be secured before an offer is made to the student, if the position is dependent upon receipt of the subsidy)
