Overview: ECO Canada is one of the partners selected by the Federal Government to deliver the Student Work-Integrated Learning Program (SWILP).  Working with employers and PSE institutions in the environmental sector, ECO Canada will administer wage subsidies to hire co-op students. .

Available funding

  • Employers may be eligible to receive a wage subsidy of 50% (up to $5000) to hire a student and may be eligible to receive 70% (up to $7000) if they hire under-represented groups including women in STEM, Indigenous students, persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and first year students
  • Ontario employers may also be eligible for a tax credit of up to $3000 for the
    Co-operative Education Tax Credit
  • Employers receiving other federal funding to hire the student will not be eligible to also receive SWILP funding

Eligible Employers

  • To qualify for the program, either the co-op position needs to be related to the environment or an environmental project
  • Employers must be willing to provide full-time work (5 days per week, 7.5 hrs per day) for a 16-week term duration in an environmental capacity

Eligible students

  • Full time environmental student enrolled in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) or business program at a Canadian post-secondary education (PSE) institution
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status
  • Must be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
  • Not currently employed as a paid employee at the host employer

How to Apply

  • Complete the Host application form on the ECO Canada website
  • Post your co-op opportunity via Carleton University’s CUHire for students in eligible programs to apply  (Note:   Approval of the wage subsidy must be secured before an offer is made to the student, if the position is dependent upon receipt of the subsidy).
