SWPP-Campus Employers
Employers from post-secondary institutions are now eligible to apply for funding to hire students through the Student Work Placement Program (SWPP).
Temporary changes to SWPP funding now provide employers with greater support and flexibility to hire students. The following is in effect until March 31, 2021.
- Net New hiring restrictions have been removed. All new students can now be considered for funding.
- Employers are now eligible for up to 75% in wage subsidies (to a maximum of $7500) for each student hired.
- Small and medium-sized employers (500 or fewer employees, including non-profit organizations) are eligible to receive 75% of a student’s subsidy up-front.
- Post-secondary institutions are now eligible to apply as employers, provided the experience is a quality work-integrated learning opportunity that is relevant to the student’s program. This also applies to research positions.
- Employers can now submit a funding pre-approval request before finalizing the hiring.
- Students may work remotely.
- Shortened work terms may be eligible (i.e. a later start date for the term).
The funding is administered via 10 sector-specific funding delivery partners who are responsible for managing and approving funding. Carleton’s co-op office is not involved in the application submission or approval process for the funding but we want to share the information with our employers so they are aware of the program.
The job description for the student must align with the mandate of one of the sector partners and provide relevant and meaningful work experience.
In addition, there are a few general eligibility requirements to be aware of:
- the student you hire must be a Canadian citizen, PR or refugee status.
- students must be paid on payroll and the employer portion of the salary cannot come from another federal funding source (i.e. NSERC or SSHRC funding).
Please contact the SWPP funding program directly regarding eligibility and applying for funding.
