Overview

Following the successful Graduate Studies Information Session for students in the fall term, the Faculty of Engineering and Design is excited to host another session this winter.

If you’re an upper-year undergraduate student curious about graduate studies in engineering or design, or you want to see some of our coolest labs, this event is for you!

This session will give you the opportunity to explore how graduate studies in Engineering, Architectural Studies, Industrial Design or Information Technology can lead to opportunities for specialized research, skill development, personal growth, and provide pathways to a rewarding career.

Please read the lab tour descriptions below to select which tour you are most interested in attending. Most tours will take 45 – 60 minutes.

Lab name: CHEeR House
Lab description: The CHEeR house is a specially-designed, solar-powered house on Carleton’s campus that is being used to test novel renewable energy and heating technologies.

Lab name: Structural Engineering Strong Floor Laboratory
Lab description: This three story space houses a large-scale shaking table for testing structures under earthquakes, and hydraulic loading equipment for breaking full-scale structural elements.

– PPE is required and will be provided (close toed shoes and hard hats)

Lab names: Graduate Electromagnetics Lab & Undergraduate Microwave and Antenna Lab
Lab description: This state-of-the-art graduate research laboratory supports advanced work in metamaterials, metasurfaces, antennas, and high-frequency on-wafer RF devices such as transmission lines, resonators, and thin-film structures. It features a microwave anechoic chamber (up to 18 GHz), compact antenna test range (CATR) (up to 45 GHz), 4-port vector network analyzer (up to 67 GHz), probe stations for wafer-level measurements, near-field antenna systems (up to 40 GHz), quasi-optical setups, a Faraday cage, and general prototyping benches. Operating in close collaboration with the Carleton University Microfabrication Facility (CUMFF), the lab enables rapid high-frequency on-wafer prototyping through cleanroom-based fabrication of subwavelength structures with explorations focusing on tunable elements, and integrated RF components—facilitating precise design, realization, and characterization of innovative electromagnetic devices for mmWave to sub-THz applications. It works in conjunction with newly renovated undergraduate microwave and antenna lab, with state-of-the-art VNAs (and RF equipment), and custom-made antenna measurement chamber for undergraduate use, commonly used by graduate student involved as teaching assistants in RF and Antenna related courses.

Lab description: This building-wide tour will provide an overview of the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, its various research and making facilities, and graduate design studios.

Lab description: During this tour, you will visit multiple labs within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering including:

Lab name: BioMechatronics Lab
Lab description: The lab conducts research on robotics, mechatronics, biomedical engineering, and instrumentation with applications in teleoperated surgery, human–machine interfaces, and medical imaging. The lab provides research opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.
