EVENT – War in Ukraine: Perspectives from the Front

Join us for a discussion with three Ukrainians about their experiences of the War in Ukraine. Organized by the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) at Carleton University and the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, the discussion will be moderated by EURUS faculty member Dr. Jeff Sahadeo.

About the Speakers:

Nataliia Nagorna is a special correspondent for the News Television Service (TSN) of the most respected Ukrainian TV channel 1+1. A war correspondent who has been covering the russia’s war against Ukraine for over 8 years, since the annexation of Crimea. Participant of the Revolution of Dignity. During the events of the revolution, she was part of the evacuation group of the Red Cross of Ukraine. She was awarded with first and second-class medals of the Order of Merit. Journalism trainer, blogger, writer. Author of the book “Return from the War” and co-author of the “War through the eyes of TSN” and “Independence through the eyes of TSN” books. She is one of the most recognizable and respected correspondents of Ukraine.

Evgeny Afineevsky is a director and filmmaker, whose latest film, Freedom on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom, depicts the realities of the horrible and unprovoked war instigated by Vladimir Putin, and explores the courage, determination, and resistance of the Ukrainian people. He earned an Oscar and Emmy nomination in 2016 for Winter on Fire: Ukraine Fight for Freedom, which details the 2013 Student Uprising turned revolution. Winter on Fire was an Official Selection of the Venice and Telluride International film festivals. He won the People’s Choice Award for the Best Documentary from the Toronto International Film Festival and received Television Academy Honors Award. In 2020, the Catholics in Media Associates organization awarded Afineevsky the 2020 CIMA Social Justice Award. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Afineevsky premiered his film Francesco at the Rome International Film Festival, where he received the Kineo Award.

His award-winning documentary, Cries from Syria, was an Official Selection at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Afineevsky won Best Director and earned nomination for Best Documentary from the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards. This film also earned IPA Satellite Awards nominations for Best Documentary and Best Song in a Documentary for Prayers for this World, performed by Cher. The Awards Circuit Community Awards nominated his movie as Best Documentary Feature for 2017. Furthermore, he won the International Documentary Association’s Courage Under Fire Award, earned a PGA Award nomination, won a Humanitas Prize and Cinema for Peace Awards as Most Valuable Documentary of the Year. He also won the 32nd Fort Lauderdale Film Festival, the Documentaries Without Borders Film Festival, and the 51st Houston WorldFest Film Festival, as well as the Overseas Press Club’s Peter Jennings Award. Recently, Cries from Syria earned 4 Emmy nominations.

Anna Zaitzeva is a twenty four-year-old wife and mother who spent almost 2 months with a baby inside Azovstal. Her husband is a soldier who was captured and remains a prisoner of war. Along with her then six-month-old son Svyastoslav, she was evacuated from the city of Azovstal.
