Contract Instructor Opportunities Fall/Winter 2017-2018

Pursuant to Articles 15 to 18 of the CUPE 4600 Unit 2 Collective Agreement, and subject to both budgetary and administrative approvals, applications are invited from members of the CUPE 4600-2 bargaining unit and other interested persons to teach the following Department of French courses during the 2017-2018 Fall and Winter terms. Please note that the University reserves the right to cancel any courses with insufficient registration.

A note to all applicants: As per Articles 16.3 and 16.4 in the CUPE 4600-2 Collective Agreement, the posted vacancies listed below are first offered to applicants meeting the incumbency criterion. FREN 1001 [1.0 credit] multiple sections, Fall-Winter (Intensive: 1 section Fall)
Elementary French

This course is designed for absolute beginners in the language. Classes use audio-visual methods, and emphasis is given to the spoken language. Introduction to reading and writing.

Lecture three hours a week. Intensive, six hours a week.

Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Applicants should have an M.A. in French or equivalent. Native or near-native fluency and excellent written skills in French are required. Candidates should also possess a strong written and spoken knowledge of English (the working language at Carleton University).

Teaching Competence: Relevant experience in teaching written and oral language at the beginner level is required, and preferably, experience teaching in a university setting.

FREN 1002 [1.0 credit] multiple sections, Fall-Winter (Intensive: 1 section Winter)
Low Intermediate French

Taught in French for students who have had exposure to French but who have difficulty using it in day-to-day communication. Emphasis on oral expression and comprehension; development of reading and writing skills. Oral practice, oral presentations, interviews, cultural activities, grammar exercises.

Lecture: three hours a week. Intensive, six hours a week.

Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Applicants should have an M.A. in French or equivalent. Native or near-native fluency and excellent written skills in French are required. Candidates should also possess a strong written and spoken knowledge of English (the working language at Carleton University).

Teaching Competence: Relevant experience in teaching written and oral language at the low intermediate level is required, and preferably, experience teaching in a university setting.

FREN 1100 [1.0 credit] multiple sections, Fall-Winter (Intensive: 1 section Fall)
Intermediate French

Taught in French. Emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Oral presentations, discussions, interviews, reading of novels and magazine articles, listening activities, grammar exercises, compositions.

Lecture: three hours a week. Intensive, six hours a week.

Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Applicants should have an M.A. in French or equivalent. Native or near-native fluency and excellent written skills in French are required. Candidates should also possess a strong written and spoken knowledge of English (the working language at Carleton University).

FREN 1110 [1.0 credit] single section, Fall-Winter
Written French 1

Taught in French. For students with low intermediate writing skills in French. Improvement of spelling, grammar, sentence-structure and vocabulary. Study of the processes involved in the production of a variety of texts. Introduction to the use of references. Self-correction.

Lecture: 3 hours a week.

FREN 2100 [1.0 credit] multiple sections, Fall-Winter
Advanced French

Taught in French. For non-francophone students. Advanced speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.  Advanced level reading from various sources, including literary texts.  Grammar exercises, essays, oral presentations. Attendance and participation are compulsory.  Limited enrolment.

Lecture: three hours a week. Intensive, six hours a week.

Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Applicants should have an M.A. in French or equivalent. Native or near-native fluency and excellent written skills in French are required. Candidates should also possess a strong written and spoken knowledge of English (the working language at Carleton University).

Teaching Competence: Relevant experience in teaching written and oral French at the advanced level is required, and preferably, experience teaching at the university level.

FREN 3050 (0.5 credit) single section, Fall
Compétences critiques

Initiation aux techniques et pratiques de la réflexion universitaire : documentation (bibliothèque, bases de données, bibliographies critiques), lecture (analyse, synthèse  et évaluation critique de textes de savoir) et réflexion (cadre théorique, méthode d’analyse, pratique du discours raisonné). Cours, trois heures par semaine.

Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Applicants should have a Ph.D. in French Studies or related field. Doctoral candidates (ABD) will be considered. Candidates should have advanced knowledge in the relevant field. Native or near-native fluency and excellent written skills in French are required. Candidates should also possess a strong written and spoken knowledge of English (the working language at Carleton University).

Teaching Competence: Relevant university undergraduate teaching experience is required. Experience teaching courses with a clear focus on undergraduate research will be an asset.

FREN 3214 F (0.5 credit) single section, Fall
Révolutions, avant-gardes et ruptures : du 19e siècle aux années 1950

Étude de quelques grands mouvements ayant rythmé la vie des lettres francophones: romantisme, réalisme, naturalisme, symbolisme, surréalisme, modernisme. La littérature de la décolonisation et l’émergence de la littérature canadienne-française. Analyse des genres et de leur évolution. Approches théoriques du texte littéraire.

Prerequisite(s): FREN 2201 or permission of the Department. Cours trois heures par semaine.

Introduction aux méthodes d’analyse littéraire

Présentation et application de diverses approches théoriques du texte littéraire : analyses structurelles, méthodes d’interprétation, contextualisation sociohistorique, poétique, etc.

Prerequisite(s): FREN 2201 or permission of the Department. Cours trois heures par semaine.

FREN 3701 F (0.5 credit) single section, Fall
Français oral

Techniques avancées d’expression orale.

L’étudiant apprendra à élaborer et à produire un discours oral lié, clair, précis, et idiomatique.  Il développera sa compétence discursive  par l’étude et la pratique de discours axés sur les fonctions suivantes du langage : informative, expressive, argumentative/incitative.

Lecture : six hours a week.

FREN 4215/5700 F (0.5 credit) single section, Fall
Problématiques contemporaines

Étude de questions contemporaines dans le domaine littéraire. Étude approfondie d’un enjeu de société contemporain trouvant expression littéraire dans les littératures francophones. Sujets pouvant être abordés : pratiques de migration, processus de transculturation, essors des transnationalismes. Réflexion autour de notions théoriques pertinentes.  Analyses de textes et approche comparatiste. Prerequisite(s): FREN 2201 and FREN 3050, or permission of the Department. Also offered at the graduate level, with different requirements, as FREN 5700, for which additional credit is precluded. Cours trois heures par semaine.

FREN 4413/5200 F (0.5 credit) single section, Fall
Diachronie du français

Étude du français, dans ses dimensions historiques. Ce séminaire permettra aux étudiants d’approfondir leurs connaissances de l’histoire du français, en suivant son évolution morphologique et syntaxique depuis le latin jusqu’au français moderne.

Precludes additional credit for LING 4413. Prerequisite(s): FREN 2401 and FREN 3050, or permission of the Department. Also offered at the graduate level, with different requirements, as FREN 5200, for which additional credit is precluded. Cours trois heures par semaine.

Candidates should have advanced knowledge in the relevant field. Native or near-native fluency and excellent written skills in French are required.
