We are five researchers involved in a SSHRC/CMHC-funded Partnership Grant, A Safe and Affordable Place to Call Home: A Multi-disciplinary Longitudinal Outcomes Analysis of the National Housing Strategy, led by Jackie Kennelly and Liam O’Brien. We are all critical social scientists (human geographers, political economists) at Carleton University, cross-appointed in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies and the Institute of Political Economy. Andree is also appointed in the Department of Political Science.

Dr. Patricia Ballamingie seeks a prospective PhD (in Geography, possibly with a specialization in Political Economy) to examine housing alternatives (e.g., with the RAship focused on the opportunities and constraints associated with tiny houses, but an open thesis topic) using primarily qualitative research methods. She can be reached at: Patricia.Ballamingie@carleton.ca

Dr. David Hugill seeks a prospective MA (in either Geography or Political Economy) to examine the politics of inner-city housing markets in Ottawa’s core neighbourhoods, using qualitative methods.  He can be reached at: David.Hugill@carleton.ca

Dr. Pablo Mendez seeks a prospective MA or PhD student with background in quantitative analysis and/or applied GIS and an interest in housing affordability and sustainable transportation. He can be reached at: Pablo.Mendez@carleton.ca

Dr. Jill Wigle seeks a prospective MA (in either Geography or Political Economy) or PhD (in Geography, possibly with a specialization in Political Economy) with interests in affordable housing and community land trusts in Ottawa and other Canadian cities using primarily qualitative research methods. She can be reached at: Jill.Wigle@carleton.ca

Dr. Peter Andree seeks a prospective MA (in either Geography, Political Economy or Political Science) with a strong interest in Community-Based Participatory Research methods and/or Indigenous Research methods. The student’s substantive area of research could be in housing, environmental, or food system issues. He can be reached at Peter.Andree@carleton.ca

Benefits include:

  • Supervision (or co-supervision) by an experienced and supportive team;
  • Competitive funding package (depending on grades, domestic applicants may be eligible for an entrance scholarship and/or a Teaching Assistantship);
  • MA research assistantship of $13,500/year for each of 2 years or PhD research assistantship of $15,000/year for 4 years;
  • Participation in a SSHRC/CMHC-funded Partnership Grant at Carleton University along with other graduate students;
  • Involvement in knowledge dissemination (co-authorship, conference presentations); and,
  • Integration with both a Carleton-based network of like-minded researchers and wider national and international networks working in their field.

If interested, please send your CV, undergraduate audit, and a cover letter detailing your interest in safe and affordable housing, background in research methods, and any relevant personal attributes, to the appropriate faculty member above, ideally by January 5, 2024.
