The Capillary Critical Geography Network inaugural conference gathering will be held May 25-26 in Ottawa. The Network brings together scholars from the region that includes Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, Peterborough, and Burlington, Vermont. Its aim is to foster connections, collaborations, and solidarity among critical geographers (and other geographically minded critical scholars) in this region. The annual conference differs from national conferences in its focus on graduate students, post-docs, and early career scholars; its lower ecological impact; and its efforts to build connections that can be maintained more practically throughout the year (given their proximity). The “capillary” provides a metaphor for the often invisible channels that course through, connect, and energize the parts of a body or region – channels that we seek to recognize and activate.
This year’s conference will take place at the Carleton Dominion Chalmers Centre in downtown Ottawa. The conference will be hosted by the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University and is being organized by professors from universities across the region.

Le colloque inaugural du Réseau capillaire de géographie critique aura lieu les 25 et 26 mai à Ottawa. Le réseau rassemble des chercheur.euse.s de la région qui comprend Montréal, Ottawa, Kingston, Peterborough et Burlington (Vermont). Son objectif est de favoriser des liens, des collaborations et la solidarité entre des géographes critiques (et d’autres chercheur.eues.s critiques avec un intérêt en géographie) dans cette région. Ce colloque se distingue des congrès nationaux par l’accent qu’elle met sur les étudiant.e.s d’études supérieures, les post-doctorant.e.s et les chercheur.e.s en début de carrière, par son impact écologique moindre et par ses efforts pour tisser des liens qui peuvent être maintenus de manière plus pratique tout au long de l’année (étant donné leur proximité). Son nom fait appel au caractère « capillaire » en référence aux canaux souvent invisibles qui traversent, relient et dynamisent les parties d’un corps ou d’une région – des canaux que nous cherchons à reconnaître et à activer.
La conférence de cette année aura lieu au Centre Dominion Chalmers de l’université Carleton, dans le centre-ville d’Ottawa. Le colloque est accueilli par le département de géographie et d’études environnementales de l’université Carleton et est organisé par des professeur.e.s d’universités de toute la région.
