Malak Al Daraawi was born and raised in Abu Dhabi, UAE, where she developed a natural curiosity for science and health. After moving to Ottawa, she pursued a Bachelor’s Honours degree in Health Sciences (BHSc) with a Minor in Biology at Carleton University and graduated in early 2023. Her keen interest in immunology drove her to join the Cassol Lab during her undergraduate studies, where she has since transitioned from the MSc to the PhD program in Health Sciences under the supervision of Dr. Edana Cassol. Her doctoral research investigates how aging alters macrophage responses to their surrounding environment (especially the lungs) and how that weakens their antiviral function. Outside of the lab, Malak enjoys exploring different forms of fitness, from running and callisthenics to Muay Thai. She also loves reading and spending time outdoors.
