Hosted by the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement and the Office of Equity and Inclusive Communities, join us on May 5th, 2023 at 1:30 pm in Teraanga Commons Conference Room 270 to discuss the importance of learning about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, girls and two-spirit folx in Canada. Laurie Odjick, an Algonquin Ikwe (Woman) from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Community has been living and working with MMIWG for the last thirteen years, serving as an advocate for her own family and for other families impacted. Laurie has been searching for her daughter, Maisy, since September 6, 2008.
Laurie previously was an active member of the National Inquiry into MMIWG, where she formed tight bonds with the families who have been affected, offering guidance and support. She helps other families by openly sharing her own lived experience of loss, strength and resilience. Laurie has also been an advocate for mental wellness through her education in addiction counselling, personal support work, and small business ownership.
Laurie is a daughter, a mother of four children, and a respected community member from Kitigan Zibi. Laurie’s goal is to raise awareness of MMIWG and to ensure that each Indigenous woman grows up in a safe world free of violence.
