From June 9-12, ITS team members will put on four presentations at the CANHEIT 2013 conference, which promotes Exceptional Ideas in higher education IT (click here for a full introduction). Each week in anticipation, we will give you a sneak peek of what’s to come from our great presenters! On Tuesday, June 11th, Danny Brown and Mike Corkum from Web Services will team up with Sang Trinh from uOttawa to tackle the challenges of web accessibility. Based on the Accessibility of Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), large organizations (such as universities) must meet web accessibility requirements by January 1st, 2014. From the CANHEIT 2013 program:

The web team at Carleton has been working hard to ensure the university’s broader web presence meets these required accessibility standards and have run into many challenges along the way, including: understanding the legal guidelines, implementing technical solutions, web governance, user training and more.

We would like to share practical solutions and best practices to address these challenges and discuss with others how best to deal with Web accessibility in a university environment.

We’d love to tell you all about the presentation, but to find out more, you’ll have to attend the conference! Visit the CANHEIT 2013 website to register for full attendance, partial attendance, or even virtual attendance! You can also follow the CANHEIT 2013 Twitter account for news and updates.
