Prof. Melanie Adrian resumes discussion on the controversial Charter of Values with an article co-written with colleague Prof. Claudia Lahaie.
The article, entitled “Far from protecting women, a secular charter would increase discrimination“, was published by The Globe and Mail today. It details an argument that the Charter of Values would increase violence in Quebec. The article is available in full on The Globe and Mail website.
Prof. Adrian initiated a panel discussion on the subject only a few months ago. The event, “An Indecent Proposal? Considering the Quebec Charter of Values“, featured leading scholars in the fields of Human Rights, Religion and Secularism, as they investigated Quebec’s controversial “values charter” and its proposal to restrict ostentatious religious symbols and clothing in the public sector.
In addition to Prof. Adrian, the panel included: Natasha Bakht, Faculty of Law | University of Ottawa; Karim Karim, School of Journalism & Communication | Carleton University; Sheema Khan, Columnist | The Globe and Mail; Karl Nerenberg, Parliamentary Correspondent | rabble.ca; and Johannes Wolfart, College of the Humanities, Religious Studies | Carleton University.
