Album Lab
Directed by John Higney
DATE & TIME: Thursdays 2:30-5:30
LOCATION: Loeb A900
Students in Ensemble X: Album Lab will develop a concert program consisting of all or a substantial portion of a single musically and culturally significant album. The program will be drawn from a diverse list of potential albums assembled by the instructor and others suggested by ensemble members themselves. The choice of the album or (significant portion) to be performed will be determined by the instructor in consultation with and consideration of the strengths of the ensemble members. The aim of Ensemble X: Album Lab is not to exactly reproduce the music in the manner of a “tribute” act. Rather, it is for the students to think deeply about their parts, sonic features, instruments, techniques, and technologies, etc. in terms of presenting an effective, cohesive, and compelling ensemble performance. Ultimately, it is hoped that the listening, analytical, and performance skills developed in Ensemble X: Album Lab will shape the student’s personal creative work in numerous areas including support musician, songwriter, arranger, producer, and band leader
