Seeking Director for Jazz Choir

May 2016

The Music program within Carleton University’s School for Studies in Art & Culture (SSAC) is seeking a director for a new vocal jazz ensemble during the 2016-2017 academic year. Duties will include conducting 12 weekly rehearsals during both the fall (September to December) and winter (January to April) academic semesters. These rehearsals will take place on Mondays between 2:30pm and 5:30pm. The director is also responsible for organizing and directing a concert at the end of each academic term. Working in collaboration with the Supervisor of Ensembles, Masterclasses and Practica, the director will plan, administer, audition, and direct the jazz choir in an effective, inclusive, and nurturing way that supports the academic activities of Carleton University’s Bachelor of Music program.

The primary qualification required for this position is a successful record of professional experience in jazz vocal performance and conducting. A Masters degree in music, teaching/directing experience at the university level, and working with both youth and inexperienced singers are all significant assets. Fluency and experience in a variety of musical styles in addition to jazz (e.g. classical, folk, popular, world music, etc.), as well as some instrumental conducting experience will be considered additional assets.

The position is part-time, and remuneration will be established in accordance with the standard ensemble director salary grid established by SSAC/Music.

Applicants are asked to send a resumé (with three listed references) and a covering letter to paul.theberge@carleton.ca.

Please note that DVDs, CDs, or URL links to YouTube or similar that demonstrate the candidate’s conducting work may be requested at a later date.

The deadline for receipt of applications is June 3, 2016. Our review of applications will begin immediately thereafter and continue until an appointment is made.
