Dr. Erin Parkes is a music teacher and researcher whose work focuses on inclusive music engagement for the neurodiverse and disability communities.
In 2012, Dr. Parkes founded the Lotus Centre, a charitable organization dedicated to community-engaged inclusive music education opportunities. The Lotus Centre’s programs have had a significant and tangible impact on fostering welcoming and accessible music environments for thousands of participants, moving beyond traditional models to create a space where everyone, regardless of ability, could experience the joy and transformative power of music.
Recognizing a critical gap in professional training, Dr. Parkes founded the Lotus Institute for Professional Development in 2019. This institute was established to meet the need for comprehensive teacher training in adaptive music education, providing educators with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to implement inclusive practices in their own classrooms and studios.
Beyond her work with the Lotus Centre and Institute, Dr. Parkes has collaborated with several prominent arts organizations to help them develop and implement adaptive and inclusive concert programming. These collaborations include projects with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Chamberfest, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and Xenia Concerts, making high-quality musical performances accessible to diverse audiences.
Dr. Parkes’ scholarly research focuses on pedagogical approaches, community impacts, and the socio-cultural dynamics of adaptive music education. Her work has been published in academic journals including International Journal of Music Education and Research Studies in Music Education, as well as a book chapter in Oxford Handbook of Special Music Education and Music Therapy. She is actively involved as a researcher at the Music and Health Research Institute, the International Institute for Critical Improvisation Studies, and the Music, Sound and Society in Canada Research Centre.
