Born and raised in Ottawa, Evan Dalling is an award-winning jazz trumpet player who does lead/commercial work as well as private teaching. He grew up playing in community bands such as the Ottawa Junior Jazz Band, the Nepean All-City Jazz Band and the Capital Youth Jazz Orchestra, all while studying privately under the direction of Nicholas Dyson. Evan was also selected for three consecutive years to be a part of the renowned Conn Selmer Centerstage Jazz Band, a nationwide big band that is brings together the best young musicians from across the country.
Upon graduating high school in 2017, Evan began his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, where he studied privately with Chase Sanborn, Jim Lewis and Nick Fraser. He played frequently in the GTA during this time, working with many well-renowned groups including John MacLeod’s Rex Hotel Jazz Orchestra and the Brian Barlow Big Band. Evan has worked at many venues in Toronto and the GTA, including the Rex, the Emmet Ray, and Drom Taberna. Outside of the jazz world, Evan also toured extensively with My Son the Hurricane, a brass/funk band based out of Niagara Falls. Evan worked with them from 2020-2022, and his time with them included a three week-long cross-country tour.
In September 2022, Evan moved to New York City to pursue a Master’s degree at the world- renowned Manhattan School of Music (class of 2024), where he was on scholarship. During his time there, Evan studied with Ingrid Jensen, Jon Faddis and Scott Wendholt. He also played locally with renowned musicians including John Benitez, Frank Lacy and the Kevin Blancq Big Band, playing at venues including Shrine Harlem, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, and the world-famous Small’s Jazz Club. Evan currently resides in New York City, but he also travels regularly to Toronto and his hometown of Ottawa to play gigs and visit friends and family. Evan is a passionate advocate of Jazz and all things music, and loves sharing his passion with others!
