Susan Toman holds a Doctorate in Music from McGill University (harpsichord). Prior to that, she completed her ARCT in piano, as well as Bachelors and Masters Degrees in music (piano, fortepiano, & harpsichord) from Wheaton College and the University of Michigan respectively.
Only after completing her Doctorate did Susan take up the Celtic harp, fueled by a love of Irish & Scottish music. Having briefly studied harp basics with Annabelle Renzo in Montreal, she immersed herself in Irish culture and tradition in County Mayo, Ireland, where she studied intensively with Grainne Hambly. Her harp discography includes 2 solo albums (Emerald Shores & Angels on High), and 2 collaborative albums (Road to the Isles & Wide Waters). She also published some of her own arrangements in her book “Dance Tunes & Airs.”
Susan Toman is active in the Ottawa area as a solo and collaborative performer, performing frequently on local concert series, at weddings and corporate events. Notable performances include the NAC’s Fourth Stage, Landsdowne Pavillion, and the Irish Ambassador’s residence. She maintains a teaching studio in her home, for harp, harpsichord, and piano students. Past teaching engagements include McGill University, University of Regina, and Greenville College.
