Neuroscience Alliance Launch a Great Success!

On Friday, September 26th, a group of sixty budding neuroscientists gathered in the new wing of Herzberg to meet and mix with one another over a fabulous fajita dinner. The goal of the evening was to create a sense of community within Carleton Neuroscience, as well as pair up first- and second-year student “mentees” with third- and fourth-year student “mentors”. The event was a great success and there was a lot of positive feedback about how it helped foster a sense of intimacy and community within a large institution, especially when first- and second-year timetables spread students out as they learn the foundational sciences such as physics, biology, chemistry and mathematics.

The Neuroscience Alliance (NeurAl) Mentorship Program is an initiative put forward by the department, but is mainly run by students, for students. Mentors are able to provide the first- and second-year mentees with non-academic advice on how to navigate their academic career, where to turn for support and how friendly and approachable the professors actually are! The mentors were all very eager to fill the newer students in on the things they wish they had known when transitioning to university.

A big thanks goes out to everyone who came out and helped make this event a success. Check out the full photo gallery here! Anyone in the Neuroscience or Neuroscience and Mental Health major that is interested in being a mentee or mentor can contact Lenore Gale for more information.
