Kelly Schincariol

Biography:

Hi! My name is Kelly! I was born and currently live in Mississauga, Ontario. I lived in Ottawa for 4 years when I was completing my undergraduate degree at Carleton. I completed my Bachelor of Science with Honors in April 2020, Majoring in Neuroscience and Mental Health with a Minor in Psychology. I took NEUR4905 in the 2019-2020 academic year and from it, developed so many important skills that I still use today. I am not sure which career path I would like to take, but through the honours workshop, I found an enjoyment for education and translating science for all to understand. I could see myself becoming a professor in neuroscience, but I am still exploring my options. I do not conduct my own research, but I volunteer in a mental health research lab at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Center. I also had the opportunity to be a research partner on CHAIM center’s Racial-Ethno Analysis project which aimed to identify underrepresentation of racial/ethnic minority groups in scientific research. My particular piece in the project involved analyzing minority group underrepresentation in trauma and creative arts therapies research. I have completed two teaching assistant positions and a volunteer term at CHEO recruiting participants for research studies within the hospital. In my free time, I enjoy reading fiction, shopping and relaxing outside or at my cottage.

Advice for 4th years: ASK FOR FEEDBACK. Asking for feedback from your professors, TAs, bosses, and mentors will highlight areas of opportunity (as I like to call them). Then put energy into improving these areas for your next assignment, report, presentation, meeting etc. It will help your professional growth by further developing your skills! You got this!
