Is there anything about Carleton Neuroscience that stood out for you?
What stood out about Carleton Neuroscience the most for me was the amazing faculty. Throughout my four years at Carleton I have found all my Neuro profs to be enthuastic and passionate about their research which translated into their teaching style. One of the things that I as a first year student was afraid to do was speak out in class and ask questions. However, the Neuro profs immediately made themselves easily approachable by fostering a friendly and non-judgemental atmosphere. Over the past four years I have found myself not only taking part in class discussions but also getting involved in a neuroscience research lab which have both improved my learning and therefore my grades. I found that especially in my last two years this faculty really mentored me and helped me figure out what I want out of my degree and all the options available to me after graduation.
Do you have any advice for current or incoming students?
To all incoming students I would say be open minded. Over four years you may find that your interests have changed and the career you thought you wanted in first year might not be what you want anymore. Immerse yourself in the classes you take and be receptive to the ideas and thoughts of others. This really helps you grow as a person and figure out what you want out of your degree. I think one of the biggest things I realized in University was that the path to your career is rarely going to be linear, there are bumps, turns and unexpected obstacles along the way. Be open minded, persistent and optimistic about your future.
