Nur is a PhD student in Political Science at Carleton University, working under the supervision of Dr. James Milner. Her research examines the Syrian refugee crisis with a focus on Türkiye’s role as a host country since 2011. Through her dissertation, she explores how Türkiye complicates the conventional Global North/Global South binary often used in asylum policy literature. By analyzing Türkiye’s hybrid position in the international system, her work challenges traditional classifications and offers new ways of understanding state responses to forced migration.
She plans to conduct fieldwork in Türkiye to gather qualitative data from policymakers, practitioners, and displaced individuals. The insights from this research will contribute to developing informed policy recommendations to better support forcibly displaced populations.
Nur holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and a Master of Science in Middle East Studies from Middle East Technical University. Her previous research focused on radical extremism, non-state armed groups and terrorism in the Middle East, providing a strong foundation for her current work on forced displacement and refugee policy.
