Daniela Danna, professor in sociology at the University of Salento, Italy, is a visiting scholar to IPE with a project at the intersection of world-system analysis and biophysical economics. She will be speaking about her book Procreation and Population in Historical Social Science (Anthem Press 2021).
The framework of her research is an attempt to read population history through the lenses of Marxism and world-system analysis (as theorized by Wallerstein), with an alternative explaination of population growth to the demographic transition theory: the spiral M-C-M’ forced proletarians and semiproletarians to reproduce. This dynamic was frequently observed in colonized lands where Europeans forced autochtones to work for them and/or to deliver goods. Demography as a discipline is creating myths that obfuscate historical developments, and should be absorbed by the unidisciplinary historical social science envisioned by Marx and by Wallerstein (with a biophysical adjustment).
