First Year Course Selection Guide

Welcome to Carleton and your Bachelor of Commerce degree program. Please read this degree guide prior to registering.

Your Degree Program

The Bachelor of Commerce degree requires the completion of 20.0 credits. If you would like to register in a full course load in your first year, you must enroll in 5.0 credits (2.5 in the Fall semester and 2.5 credits in the Winter semester).

Regardless of a concentration, over the course of your first year, you can take 3.5 credits in BCOM REQUIRED courses, 1.5 credits in ELECTIVE courses, and you must register in BUSI 1995, which is the first level of your Employability Passport program requirement.

Select the Course Selection Guide that meets your registration needs and admissions requirements:

BCom First Year Course Selection

Remember to register in both the Fall and Winter terms when your time ticket opens!

1. BUSI 1995: Employability Passport (0.0 credit). Fall AND Winter terms. This is a mandatory, noncredit course that you must register for in BOTH terms.
NOTE: this course will appear on your timetable; however, it is not a class that you attend each week. You may therefore have a scheduling conflict with this course on your timetable.

2. BUSI 1800: Introduction to Business (0.5 credit). Fall term.
NOTE: BUSI 1800 is a prerequisite for BUSI 1004.

3.ECON 1001: Introduction to Economics: Microeconomics(0.5 credit). Fall OR Winter term. You must choose the section that is open only to Business students.

4. ECON 1002: Introduction to Economics: Macroeconomics (0.5 credit). Fall OR Winter term. You must choose the section that is open only to Business students.
NOTE: ECON 1001 in not a prerequisite for ECON 1002.

5. PSYC 1002: Introduction to Psychology II (0.5 credit). Fall OR Winter term. You must choose the section that is open only to BCom students.
NOTE: PSYC 1001 is not required as a prerequisite for the Business section of this course.

6. SOCI 1005: Sociology for Bachelor of Commerce Students (0.5 credit). Fall OR Winter term.

7. BUSI 1004: Financial Accounting for Business Students (0.5 credit). Winter term. You must successfully complete BUSI 1800 in the Fall term in order to remain in BUSI 1004 in the Winter term.
NOTE: You will require BUSI 1004 to gain access in your second year to BUSI 1005: Managerial Accounting for Business Students.

8. MATH 1009: Mathematics for Business (0.5 credit). Fall OR Winter term.

9. Free Electives (1.5 credits). To complete your registration in 2.5 credits (full course load) each term, you may select courses based on interest: this includes courses in any subject. Please contact your Sprott First Year Student Advisor at rhonda.kelly@carleton.ca if you have any questions or concerns regarding free electives.

8. MATH 0009: Calculus and Vectors (0.5 credit). Fall term.
NOTE: You must successfully complete this course in your first term of registration (Fall term) to meet the conditional Math requirement of your Offer of Admission and remain in the BCom program. This credit does not count towards your BCom program requirements. Your registration in MATH 0009 in the Fall term will result in you having to complete 0.5 credits in a future term, prior to your graduation.

9. MATH 1009: Mathematics for Business (0.5 credit). Winter term.
