First Year Course Selection Guide

Welcome to Carleton and your Bachelor of Commerce degree program. Please read this guide prior to registering in your first year courses.

Your Degree Program

The Bachelor of Commerce degree requires the completion of 20.0 credits.

To register in a full course load in your first year, you must enroll in 5.0 credits (2.5 credits in the Fall term and 2.5 credits in the Winter term) AND you must also register and complete one 0.0 credit course (BUSI 1995) to fulfill the Employability requirement of your first year.

Select the Course Selection Guide that meets your registration needs and admissions requirements:

BCom First Year Course Selection

Remember to register in both the Fall and Winter terms when your time ticket opens!

1. BUSI 1995: Employability Passport (0.0 credits)
When: Fall OR Winter term.
Note: This is a mandatory, non-credit course that you must complete in your first year. The course does not have a scheduled class time; therefore, it will not show up on your timetable. Please ensure that you register in the course in either Fall or Winter – course completion is required for progression.

2. BUSI 1800: Introduction to Business(0.5 credits)
When: Fall term.
Notes: Register in both the Lecture and the Tutorial. BUSI 1800 must be successfully completed in the Fall term in order to continue in BUSI 1004 in the Winter term: BUSI 1800 is a prerequisite for BUSI 1004.

3. ECON 1001: Introduction to Economics: Microeconomics(0.5 credits)
When: Fall term.
Notes: Section D or Section E are open to Business students only.

4. ECON 1002: Introduction to Economics: Macroeconomics (0.5 credits)
When: Winter term
Notes: Section D (includes Discussion Group) or Section E are open to Business students only. ECON 1001 is not a prerequisite for ECON 1002.

5. PSYC 1002: Introduction to Psychology II (0.5 credits)
When: Fall OR Winter term.
Notes: BCOM students are not required to take PSYC 1001 as a prerequisite for the Business only sections of PSYC 1002 – Section D in the Fall term & Section J in the Winter term.

6. SOCI 1005: Sociology for Bachelor of Commerce Students (0.5 credits)
When: Fall OR Winter term.

7. BUSI 1004: Financial Accounting for Business Students (0.5 credits)
When: Winter term.
Notes: Add this course to your Winter registration after registering for BUSI 1800 in the Fall term – you may receive a prerequisite warning while planning your worksheet. BUSI 1004 is a prerequisite for BUSI 1005. BUSI 1005 will be completed in Year 2.

8. MATH 1009: Mathematics for Business (0.5 credits)
When: Fall OR Winter term.
Notes: Register in both a Lecture and a Tutorial.

9. BUSI 1401: Foundations of Information Systems (0.5 credits)
When: Fall OR Winter term.

10. Free Electives(1.0 credits)
When: Fall AND/OR Winter terms.
Notes: Select courses based on your interests to complete your registration in 2.5 credits (full course load) each term. Electives can include courses in other subjects, or you may choose to register for 2000-level BUSI courses if you meet the prerequisites and feel ready for second year expectations.

1. ESLA 1300 OR ESLA 1500 OR ESLA 1900.
When: Register in the relevant courses by term as outlined in your offer of admission.
Notes: The total number of credits that you register in while enrolled in ESLA courses will depend on the number of additional credits allotted to each ESLA level (https://admissions.carleton.ca/esl). Confirm your specific requirements and choose from the list of courses below.

2. BUSI 1995: Employability Passport (0.0 credits)
When: Fall OR Winter term.
