The Campus Safety Services joins community partners for Shine the Light

Thursday, Nov. 29th, 2012

From late-November until mid-December, the Campus Safety Services will sport purple ribbons to stand in solidarity with abused women during the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse Campaign. The campaign is designed to raise awareness of woman abuse by displaying the colour purple in various places on campus.

Purple is a symbol of courage, survival and honour and has come to symbolize the fight to end woman abuse.

The campaign spans a number of important dates in the fight against woman abuse.

The Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women (OCTEVAW) has designated Nov. 29, 2012 as the day to wear purple in support of the campaign.

The campaign also spans the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, which runs from Nov. 25 to Dec. 10, 2012. The 16-day period includes these significant dates:

  • Nov. 25: The International Day Against Violence Against Women
  • Nov. 29: International Women Human Rights Defender Day
  • Dec. 1: World AIDS Day
  • Dec. 3: International Day of Disabled Persons
  • Dec. 6: Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre
  • Dec. 10: International Human Rights Day

The Campus Safety Services is proud to stand with Equity Services, OCTEVAW and other community partners during the shine the light campaign.
