Every year thousands of stolen bicycles are recovered, however the Ottawa Police Service can’t find the proper owners.

CBC Ottawa reported that there where thousands of recovered bicycles are auctioned off by Police every year.

Some tips to increase the odds of having your bicycle returned to you in the event that it is stolen:

–          If your bicycle is stolen; report it!
Police and other law enforcement agencies can only return your bicycle if they know it’s stolen and who the owner is.

–          Register your bicycle with the Carleton University bicycle registration form.

–          Record your serial number and other important details or customizations of  your bicycle.
In the event that your bicycle is stolen, you can include these details in the report.

–          Engrave a customized number on your bicycle
Engravers are available from the Campus Safety Services for free rental. Carleton University has a personalize code that can be engraved into your bicycle to identify it as being stolen from Carleton University.

The Campus Safety Services would like to remind everyone to use a proper “U-Lock” rather than cable locks to deter thieves.
