Crime Prevention Program: Lock It or Lose It.

On September 6th 2012, the Campus Safety Services started a crime prevention program entitled Lock It or Lose It. The Lock it or Lose It program see’s officers conducts an audit of parked vehicles and audits their vulnerability to theft.

The lock it or lose it audit was conducted by members of the department’s patrol services. The audits consist of completing a Lock It or Lose It form on the condition of the vehicle at the time of the inspection. The completed form is then placed on the vehicles windshield to notify the driver of the results. Members look for windows left open, vehicles that are unlocked or valuables left in plain sight.

A review of 156 vehicles was completed on September 6th 2012 focusing on parking lots three and five which resulted in sixteen per cent of vehicles were found with valuables left in plain sight. Officers discovered five vehicles left unlocked and one with a window open.

On September 7th 2012, officers audited 135 vehicles targeting the parking garage. Almost 40 per cent of vehicles audited had valuables visual.

Drivers who leave valuables in plain sight raise their chances of being targeted by thieves.

The Campus Safety Services would also like to remind motorist of some other tips to keep themselves and their vehicles safe:

-Always park in well lit areas,
-Always roll up your windows and lock the doors,
-Never leave valuable objects or packages in full view. Remove them or put them in the truck,
and never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running.

Remember, it takes less than 30 seconds for a professional thief to steal your vehicle without the key.
